"O" is for Octopuses
Two other pulrals for octopus are : "octopi", or "octopodes".
Octopuses have two eyes and four pairs of arms (or legs, depending on the person observing the octopus). Until researching this blog about octopi, I had always thought of their appendices as "legs".
However, according to scientific authorities, they are "arms". They have a hard "beak" for a mouth at the center of point of their arms. Their heads are large and elongated, giving them an alien-like look. They have no internal, or external skelton. Their skin can change color for camouflage.
In Japanese, they are called, "tako". The tako is very popular in Japanese culture as a food source, of course, as well as a "cute" cartoon image. Most Japanese kids can easily draw a tako. The majority of Western children are not very fond of octopodes, some thinking that they resemble little monsters.
Octopuses can eject a thick, black cloud of ink to help them escape from predators. (V.C)
