英会話ブログ その766        Animals, from A to Z

"Z" is for Zoo (Part 1)

I haven't been to a zoo in years.  How about you ?

To be honest, I am not particularly (especially) fond of (to like) the zoo.  Deep down inside me (in my mind, in my heart), I feel sorry for the animals caged up (forced to live in cages) like criminals of nature.  It breaks my heart to see wild animals squeezed into small spaces, with no hope of ever running free again, only to be gaped at (looked at, stared at) by crowds of kids and adults for amusement.

Of course, for the zoo, popular animal attractions bring in lots of money.  Zoos are not free.  People have to pay to get inside.  Once inside, the paying customers then pay more money to buy food and some souvenirs (omiyage) and sometimes have to pay more money to see special attractions.  It's a business, however, it is also an education, especially for children.  Most kids love the zoo !                                              (V.C)
