The teacher (who was often one of the sports team coaches) stood at the bottom and blew his whistle signaling the students to start climbing. This was a difficult exercise, especially for fat kids or those scared of heights.

The other activity we hated was dancing. Now, this wasn't hip-hop or freestyle, as they do in P.E. today, but rather traditional American Square dancing.
Couples moved in certain patterns as instructed by the "caller" on a recording, along with a kind of country music. The worst part, was that the male student had to ask a female student to be his dance partner, which resulted in a lot of embarrassment...
When the class was over, boys and girls went into their separate locker rooms to take a shower and change clothes.
There weren't any private shower stalls, only big one for everybody, which resulted in more embarrassment, as Americans aren't used to bathing together.
