Tips for traveling / studying or working in the United States (1)

Being the invited guest at an American's house / home

Americans are generally on time for meetings, parties, or any kind of appointment.  This part of American culture is similar to Japanese culture.  It is sometimes okay to be late to a drinking party at a person's house or appartment, however, in most other situations it is not acceptable to be late.  When you are in America, try to be on time for anything you are invited to, especially if you have only recently met the host of the event.

When being invited to a meeting or a BBQ at someone's home (this is very common in America, so if you will be studying or working there expect this to happen at least once when you are there), offer to bring a small gift.  For example, offer to bring plastic cups, napkins, a bottle of soda, a bottle of wine, a six-pack of beer, flowers or a homemade side dish.
Some gifts you should never give are money, food that you didn't make that you bought quickly at a convenience store or a fast food restaurant before coming, or very personal items like toiletries.                 (J.F)
