Summer Vacation in the United States (1)

Japanese people often use the word "holiday" to describe Saturdays and Sundays when you do not work, but this is not correct.
Saturdays and Sundays, also called "the weekend", are called "days off" or "free days".  The word "holidays" actually describes special days such as Christmas, Christmas Eve, Obon, New Year's and other important special days during the year.

Summer vacation, or "summer holidays" are generally a little longer than summer vacation in Japan.  The normal American working man or woman will have 2 weeks off during the summer and most American schoolchildren will have 7 to 10 weeks off from school during the summer.                  (J.F)
