The league of American football is called the NFL - this name stands for the National Football League.  There are other small leagues but this is the main league.

The number of teams is changing every few years but there are usually around 30 teams.  
The championship game is called the Super Bowl.  The Super Bowl is the most watched TV show in the United States.  Games are played every Sunday and it is common to see bars crowded with people watching games on Sundays from the football season in August to January.

Trying to understand the basic rules of the game or at least a few of the famous names will make your visit to America more interesting, especially if you are visiting during the football season.

Rugby - A sport that is similar to American football.  It is not popular in the U.S. but is popular in the U.K, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

The Super Bowl - The most important sporting event in the United States.  It is the championship game of the NFL.  It usually happens in late January or early February every year.  More people watch this game than any other show on TV.

To have something in common - To be similar - two people or two different non-living objects.
