Mexico and the United States Continued (3)

Many Mexicans risk their lives to come to the United States.  The reasons for their move to "El Norte" (the North, in Spanish) are many.

One of the biggest reasons is that their hometowns are poor and there is no work to be found there.  They are therefore coming to the United States in search of any kind of work.  The economy of the United States is much better than the economy of Mexico so they can make a lot more money in the United States than they could if they stayed in Mexico.

Another reason for coming to the U.S. is that these immigrants are from communities with a lot of Drug Cartel violence ("cartel" is similar to yakuza), and they or their family members have been threatened by the drug cartels and gangs for some reason.
They are therefore coming to the United States for their own safety.

A third reason is that the person has family in the U.S. and wants to join them but cannot come to the United States legally.                      (J.F)
