Christmas Carols (2)

Probably the most famous Christmas Carol is "Jingle Bells" written by James L. Pierpont in 1857.  It was originally meant as a song for Thanksgiving Day, not Christmas, but later became the #1 Christmas song.
The lyrics are not religious, but refer to a ride in a horse cart in winter...

Perhaps the next most popular song at Christmas is "Silent Night".  This was originally a German song called "Stille Nacht" written in the early 1800s.  It is a religious song concerning the Christ Child.

Later in the 20th century, more light-hearted Christmas sons such as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", "Frosty the Snowman" and "Santa Clause is Comin to Town" added some humor to the more traditional themes mentioned earlier.

Another very famous Christmas song is "White Christmas" written by Irving Berlin and made famous in a movie called Holiday Inn in 1942.

Everyone enjoys hearing and singing these songs at Christmas.  Sometimes the old-fashioned lyrics are hard to underdstand, but most people don't mind.  They like them anyway !                              (G.K)
