The Great American Car (2)

Gasoline was cheap (well, until the Mid 1970s, anyway).  The cars had bold styling and powerful engines, and most were of simple enough mechanical desigh that an amateur ("Shadetree") mechanic could fix most problems by themselves.

The names of the cars reflected a vision of an exciting driving experience: Charger, Cougar, Challenger, Fury, and Trans Am were some of the most popular cars made by "Ford, Chevrolet, Pontiac and Plymouth during this time.

Things began to change in the Mid 1970s due to the oil embargo imposed by OPEC (Arab oil producing countries) against Western countries because of political reasons.(1973)

Gasoline became more scarce and more expensive.  The situation continued until 1974, but car  companies had already begun to introduce "compact" cars such as the Pacer and the Gremlin.

Aso, due to eco concerns, cars had to have emission (CO2) control systems on them which reduced their power.

Smaller cars made by Japan became more popular and cheaper to run.   The Golden Age of the American car was over.

Today, some of the classic cars bring a big price - if you can find them and if you don't mind spending a lot of money for gas !                              (G.K)
