Pet Names (1)

Although not often used in Japan, "pet names" are very popular in other parts of the world.

What is a "pet name" ?  Is it a name given to your dog or hamster ?  No !  They are names given to loved ones by  other people.

The use of pet names to show love or affection for someone is very old, especially in the English language.

They appear in various forms in Shakespeare's plays or even in the Bible.

Basically, a pet name is a nickname used instead of the loved one's real name.  It could be older-type pet names like "darling", "sweetheart" or "dear", or newer ones like "Boo" "Cuddles" or "Pooh bear".

Almost always they are used to show a warm loving feeling for someone, usually a lover.                            (G.K)
