The Mafia in America (1)

Ever since the "Godfather" movies in the 1970s (1 and 2 are great, the 3rd movie not so much), Americans have been very interested in the Mafia. (in this case, "Mafia" means the Italian Mafia)

Although they are criminals who break the law regularly, there's something romantic and exciting about this semi-secret group.

Maybe because they live outside of society, taking a big risk, getting and losing large amounts of money, fighting for power and sometimes living a short violent life, they appeal to a big part of the American people.

The Mafia began a long time ago in Sicily (an island, part of Italy) and was transplanted to the US with the large number of Italian immigrants in the late 19th century.

Although it spread through the whole country, it was most strongly based in NYC, Chicago, New Orleans and L.A.                       (G.K)
