What is a "Bro" ? (1)

2014/08/12

It's common in the USA and even in England to hear males, (usually under age 40, but not always) call each other "bro".

But what does this strange word mean ?  Is it a name ?

The word "bro" originally came from "brother", as a shorter form of it.  It usually has the meaning of  a) an actual borther  b) a male friend  c) any guy (in this case used to refer to or address him).

The word actually started as early as the 17th century, but it was used in its present form mostly starting in the 1960s in the USA, as used by surfers, African-Americans, and others.

But since around 2000, it has taken on an even more wide usage, and "bros" have become almost a separate group in themselves.

Generally, a bro is a man who is proud to be a man, and who usually does "manly activities" such as sports, drinking, barbecuing and chasing girls.                             (G.K)
