American "Rednecks" (1)


Fans of American country - Western music are very familiar with the word "redneck", as it is a very common word in those types of songs.

It is also a cultural and even a political word as well.  But what is a "redneck"?

This word has been used in the USA for over 100 years, and originally referred to a poor white country person or laborer (usually from the southern USA).

The reason they were called "rednecks" is that such a person's skin was often burnt red by working outdoors in the sun, especially on the back of their necks.  It's also possible that the word was used in parts of the UK even before that...                              (G.K)
