The Different Meanings of "Work" (1)

Most English learners are certainly familiar with the word "work".

The majority of people do work, and have probably heard that this English word means "to perform an action or labor, usually in return for money or other benefit."

That is by far the common definition of "work", but it is sometimes used in other ways as well.

For example, if a machine or device is broken or won't operate, we would probably say "It doesn't work."

When we say this, we don't have an image of the device sitting at home watching TV instead of going to the office.  We feel that it isn't doing the function we expect it to do.                                    (G.K)
