Inside the station, it was also quieter than usual, and Toshi wondered briefly why it seemed as if a blanket had been thrown over the city, and what was the cause of the almost grim silence...

In any case, he slapped his train pass over the scanner and hurried to the platform.  If he wasn't in just before 9, Kimura would surely have a sour look for him, and as office gossip had it, too many sour looks resulted in a cold winter indeed for recently ex-employees...

He joined the mass of people surging into the train and flopped into a seat just before a long-haired teenager got it.  The kid just shrugged and grabbed a strap.

Toshi unfolded his Asahi Shimbun, noticing that it was stiil black outside.  What was it ?  Heavy pollution from China ?  But page 2 of the paper held the answer:
