英会話ブログ その514      Phrasal Verbs used in Sports (2)

2014/11/10

Here are two examples, the first in verb form and the second in noun form:

" I'm going to work out at the gym tonight.  I'll lift weights and run on the treadmill for 1 hour. "

" Wow !  That was a good workout.  My muscles hurt. "

After you are finished, try creating your own sentences using these phrasal verbs above.  Ask your teacher at English Village if you are confused about the exact meaning, or usage of anything here.

To work off - This verb means to burn calories and to try to lose fat that you have gained from eating junk food.  It is often used after eating a big meal or after people return home from a long vacation when they did not exercise at all.  This verb is usually followed by the food that you ate.  Here is an example:

" I was sitting on the beach in Jamaica for 1 week every day and I ate junk food for every meal.  I did not work out at all and I gained 10 kilograms on the trip.  I need to burn off that food I ate on my vacation.  Want to go to the gym tonight ? "                                    (J.F)
