Marcos was the President of the Philippines then, and at that time he ruled the country with an iron fist.  He was a staunch nationalist and anti-communist.

Like many other leaders in, and/or close to Southeast Asia, he was very concerned that the "Domino Theory", or the "Domino Effect", as this phenomena was called, might include the Philippines, as one country after another, usually neighboring countries, fell to communism, or some form of it, since the end of World War Two.

He fully supported The Vietnam War and was totally pro-American.

I was aware of all of this as my plane touched down in Manila. I also knew that he had imposed Martial Law in order to maintain his tight grip on the country.                              (V.C)
