英会話ブログ その517     Manila (3)

2014/11/14

Tula had offered me a reasonable rate to drive me to downtown Manila.  His price was probably a little lower than the other hawkers with cars for hire waiting in front of the airport, but the general rule is that they are all rip-off artists, trying to hack out a living in a relatively poor country with political unrest.

So, I had let my "gut" decide which driver would be a safe bet, at a faily cheap fare, to get me to my 2 star hotel.

Tula had a pleasant round face, a wide gold-capped smile and a shiny bald head.  "Tula" was actually his nick-name, given to him by his friends because "tula" in his native language meant, "bald".  I never learned his real name.                        (V.C)
