英会話ブログ その537     El Diablo (2)

2014/12/04

We were at the base of an ominous looking mountain the superstitious locals called, "El Diablo", which is Spanish for "Devil"

I supposed that this was because the shape of the mountain kind of resembled a monstrous devil's head.  It wasn't very high, but it had steep slopes covered with dense jungle.

Over the years, a narrow curved path had been carved out with machetes ( short, sharp sword-like weapons which doubled up as cutting tools to get through thick jungle ) by the natives.

Most of the indigeneous peoples living in poor, small villages in the countryside carried machetes.  All I carried was an 8 inch Bowie knife and a pack of Marlboroughs.                                      (V.C)
