英会話ブログ その547     English Word Observation ; Grave (3)

2014/12/15

In the end, gravity pulls us all down into the ground.  Gravestones mark the spots in the graveyards. Gravediggers dig the holes.

Now let's look at "grave" used as an adjective to describe a serious situation.

Recently, the Assad government in Syria has been accused of using Sarin gas; targetting opposition fighters as well as innocent civilians, including children, killing thousands.  Already, as it is, over the last couple of years, about 600,000 people have been killed in the civil war by conventional weapons.

So you can say, " The carnage in Syria continues, inflicting immeasurable human suffering on the Syrian people.  The situation there is grave. "                             (V.C)
