英会話ブログ その551     Hobo (3)

2014/12/19

Difficult train lines or police were noted and the word was spread.  A few hobo words such as "cannonball" (a fast train), "catching the westbound" (dying)  and "on the fly" (jumping on a moving train) became common.

Hobo camps, in which dozens of hobos came together to pool their resources and share information were actually established.

Hobos still exist today, although a lot less than before, and the image of the rag-wearing, free-riding "king of the road" has become a somewhat romantic one in stories , movies and country-western songs, even as the number of hobos dwindles...                                     (G.K)
