英会話ブログ その557     English Word Observation ; United (2)

To remain free, yet united at the same time seems somewhat contradictory; and sometimes there is conflict which leads to war.

The American Civil War (1861 - 1865) was fought by one side trying to pull out of the union, and the other trying to preserve it.  750,000 soldiers died in that war, and an undetermined number of civilians were killed, but the United  States remained "united."

"United we stand, divided, we fall !"

This saying probably goes back to the days of the Roman Empire and as the Roman legions marched across Europe, conquering and subjugating peoples of different cultures and languages, they also civilized most of the region with Roman laws and the Latin language.  The Romans went as far as Hadrians Wall in northern England.  They occupied that area for 400 years, or so.
