- To bulk up

When someone bulks up they gain muscle weight, or make their muscles bigger by going to the gym and lifting weights and doing other exercises that will make your muscles larger.  This phrasal verbs is usually used in sports where the size of the athletes is very important, such as rugby, wrestling and American football.

" The football players spent a lot of time in the gym before the season so that they could bulk up before the season began.  The larger you are in football, the easier it is to be successful. "


- To take part

This phrasal verb means "to paricipate" or "to play" in a sport.  It is always used in group sports and is not usually used for professional sports but instead in sports that are played with friends or in high school.

" Although I was already very busy with my school studies, I took part in two sports teams when I was in high school.  I was the only person in my family who ever took part in playing sports in high school. "                               (J.F)
