The New Year's holiday in Japan is mostly a family affair.  Many people return home to celebrate the holiday and enjoy the festive environment with relatives.  In keeping with tradition, families often visit shrines and temples to pray for health and good fortune.

As an expatriate in Japan, New Year's holiday is a different experience .  In America, celebrations begin on New Year's Eve as people gather to wish each other hapiness in coming year.

Countdown parties with food and alcohol are popular, and are usually highlighted by large fireworks displays at the stroke of midnight.                                    (S.H)
