英会話ブログ その590     Life in The Cubicle (1)

2015/01/31

One of the most notable aspects of American office culture is the cubicle.

This is a three-sided partition, usually of wood, which surrounds a worker's desk ("workspace"), and extends to a height of about 1.5 meters.

Until the late 1960s or early 1970s, most American offices were similar to those in Japan; that is, an open room filled with desks at which the workers sat while doing their tasks.

But such a system offers little or no privacy, so some designers in the '60s came up with the concept of a 3-sided work area which allowed to people to have a bit of privacy while still enabling them to be part of the office environment without isolating them.                                  (G.K)
