英会話ブログ その600     Valentine's Day (2)

2015/02/12

Ancient Rome celebrated a festival called Lupercalia from Februay 13th - 15th which was connected to the idea of fertility.  Some people believe there is a connection between the two, other people think there is no connection - what do you think ?

Our modern Valentine's celebration comes from the U.K.  Geoffrey Chaucer, a writer mentioned it in his poem written in 1382 and Valentines are also mentioned in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet.

In the 18th century children's nursery rhymes had the lines " the rose is red, the violet is blue, honey is sweet, and so are you ".                                       (R.C)
