英会話ブログ その601     Valentine's Day (3)

2015/02/13

By 1797 sending cards was common and there was even a book for helping people write romantic poetry.

Card sending became popular in the U.S.A in the 19th century strongly supported by a card company called Hallmark.

In most countries both men and women exchange gifts, cards and chocolate, but in Asia this is different because only women give men chocolates not vice versa.

On White Day - March 14th the gifts are returned.  Valentine's day was introduced to Japan in 1953 by the Morozoff company and in 1958 Isetan promoted it encouraging people to buy chocolates.                                     (R.C)
