英会話ブログ その624     The Need for Speed (1)

2015/03/17

Let's just say upfront that Americans are bad drivers.  Oh, they have a lot of experience driving; after all we get our driving license at age 16 in the USA.

It's just that Americans are, shall we say, very flexible about following the rules of the road.

Driving over the speed limit ("speeding") is the number one offense committed by drivers in the USA.

Drivers in other countries (especially France, Italy) also do this, but American drivers seem to see speeding as striking a blow against the huge forces of government that want to restrict their freedom.

To this end, you can buy a lot of radar detectors in the USA.  These small devices placed close to the driver in the car give a warning sound if police are nearby and using their radar to catch speeders.

Also, on the internet are wedsites which tell where most police "speed traps" are located on highways across the USA.                                               (G.K)
