英会話ブログ その625     The Need for Speed (2)

2015/03/19

The speed limit on National highways was lowered to 55 mph (89kmh) in the 1970s to save gasoline, but this was unpopular and a lot of drivers routinely drove faster.  At least one rock song, " I can't drive 55 " by Sammy Hagar, was inspired by this attitude.

In 1995 the law was changed allowing each state to decide their own speed limit.  The average is 70 mph (113kmh), although in the Western states it is generally higher.

For a while in the late 1990s, Montana had no limit at all ( Now it is 75mph), and a part of Texas has a limit of 85mph (136kmh).                                  (G.K)
