"Catching on" is an idiom which means, "becoming popular".  In English, the word, "becoming" is interchangeable with "getting".  If you really want to improve (power-up) your English conversation skill, mastering the usage of the almighty word "get" is a definite must.

Another word of equal importance is "take".  These two words are among the most "used" words in the English language.
