So-called Greek-letter organizations are old in the US, going back as far as 1776.  They use greek names due to the classical nature of college education at the time.

Members of a fraternity are called "brothers", as in "my fraternity brother", and sorority members are called "sisters".

Typical fraternity and sorority group mames might be Phi Beta Kappa or Alpha Epsilon Omega...

Students often wear three Greek letters on their sweatshirts or caps to identify their "house".                                        (G.K)
