ある程度英語でのコミュニケーションがとれるようになると、ちょっといつもと違った表現を使ってみたいと思うようになりますよね。聞いたらわかるけど、実はあまり自分では使えていない・・・という表現が多くあると思いますので、今回は《時》を表す表現を紹介します。

◆初級
① 毎日　⇒　everyday

② 午前中に　⇒　in the morning

③ 夜に　⇒　at night

④ 去年　⇒　last year

⑤ 2年前　⇒　２ years ago

⑥ その時　⇒　at that time

⑦ 先日　⇒　the other day

⑧ 来年　⇒　next year

⑨ 将来は　⇒　in the future

⑩ いつか　⇒　some day

⑪ この次は　⇒　next time

⑫ 同時に　⇒　at the same time

⑬ 時間通りに　⇒　on time

⑭ いつものとおり　⇒　au usual

⑮ しばらくの間　⇒　for a while

※使い方としては、シンプルに文の最初や最後につけます。文末につけるのが一番簡単です。

◆中級
① After a while （later）
You’ll get bored with that video game after a while.

②At once　（immediately）
If we don’t leave at once, we’ll be late for the movie.

③All at once　（suddenly , unexpectedly）
All at once the sky became dark.

④At long last　（after a very long time, finally）
At long last, we can watch flock of whales.

⑤ Day in and day out　（regularly, all the time）
Joey likes driving day in and day out.

⑥In the nick of time　（just before it’s too late）
I arrived at the airport in the nick of time.

⑦ Around the clock 　（continuously ,without a break）
CNN broadcasts news around the clock.

⑧ Before long　（in a short time）
We’ll be able to see each other again before long.

⑨ Right off the bat　（immediately）
When I get home, I take a shower right off the bat.

⑩Year after year　（regularly for many years）
It seems the summer in Japan is getting hotter, year after year.

⑪All along　（all the time, from the beginning）
Did you know all along that I’d give you a birthday present, or were you surprised?

⑫Ahead of time　（before a schedule time or event）
If you take time off of work, you should tell your boss ahead of time.

⑬ In the long run 　（eventually, after a long period of time）
Although the cost of this project is considerable as you mentioned, it should pay off in the long run.

いつもの会話の中にこういった表現を付け加えるとシンプルだった表現も少し幅がでてきますね。使ったことのない表現があれば、次の機会に是非挑戦してみて下さいね。（IELTSや英検のspeaking testなどでも、時制を正しく使うことはポイントとなります。）

私も、ノートを見直すと習った言葉なのに「最近使ってなくて忘れてたな」と思い出すことがあります。スクールでのレッスンでも、自分で勉強したことも、時々見直して復習することも大事ですね。
