Hi, イングリッシュビレッジのAtsukoです。

だいぶ花粉も落ち着き、暖かいこともあり外ではマスクを外し気持ちよく歩けるようになりました。
このマスクを外す・・・ですが、意外と上級レベルの方でも英語での表現を勘違いしていることに気付きました。

put onが“身につける”なので、外すことはput offと一瞬思ってしまいそうですが、
“マスクを外す”は「I’ll take off the mask」となります。
put off は「延期する」という全く別の意味となります。

ということで、本日はputを使った表現を集めてみました。

① Put on
（to place on oneself）身につける
Put your mask on when you get on a train.

(to gain)体重が増す
My mother has put on a lot of weight recently.

（to perform）
ショー・劇を上映する、公開する
Broadway recently put on the best performance of Phantom of the Opera ever.

② Put away
(to remove from sight)(to put in the proper place)片付ける・収納する
Please put away your toys before you eat snacks.

③ Put off
（to postpone）延期する
Let’s put the party off until next weekend.

④ Put out
（to extinguish）消す
No smoking is allowed in here. Please put out your cigarette.

⑤ Put down
（to suppress）抑える
The police arrived just in time to put down the disturbance before it got very serious.

(to criticize unfairly)辱める
He always puts down his wife in front of his friends.

⑥ Put up
(to construct)組み立てる
The construction company is tearing down that old office building in order to put up a new one.

(to lift) (to raise upwards)立てる
We always put up our Christmas tree after Thanksgiving.

⑦ Put up with
(to tolerate)耐える・我慢する　(to accept unwillingly)仕方なく引き受ける
There’s too much noise in here for me to study. I can’t put up with it any longer.

Putを使った表現はとても多く、ここにあげた意味や例以外もあります。
授業の中で講師と確認していただき、もっともっと例文を作り沢山練習してみて下さいね。
